Event information

Positive energy districts (PEDs) and thermal energy storage (TES) are emerging as key building blocks in Europe’s transition toward climate neutral, resilient urban areas. PEDs aim to integrate renewable generation, flexible demand, and smart energy management at district scale. Achieving this requires solutions that can handle variability, shift loads, and balance energy flows across buildings and infrastructures. This is where TES becomes highly relevant: by storing heat when renewable energy is abundant and releasing it when demand peaks, TES supports grid stability, reduces reliance on fossil-based peak supply, and enhances local flexibility. Together, PED and TES technologies  can provide more citizen centered energy systems capable of addressing the growing challenges of energy security and decarbonization, and urban energy demand. However, how the two fit together and interact is still being tested and will depend on each case study.

To address the complementarity of TES in PEDs, we invite you to an upcoming joint Knowledge Exchange ForumTES and PEDs! During this discussion session, the ThumbsUp and InterPED projects will explore the full journey from thermal energy storage installation in buildings to district level system integration. Across Europe, ThumbsUp is testing compact thermal energy storage in real buildings, revealing new insights about installation and operation. InterPED takes the next step by developing interoperability and data exchange solutions needed to integrate technologies within districts and wider energy systems.

To get the discussion started we will hear from:

The session will be moderated by Emilia Pisani, project manager at RISE
