From Lab to Life

ThumbsUp aims to transition thermal energy storage (TES) technologies from the laboratory to real-life applications through a structured approach; Validation, Demonstration, Replication 

This process will help make TES a key technology for improving energy efficiency and supporting grid flexibility in buildings.

Validate

ThumbsUp will focus on the development and optimization of innovative storage materials, ensuring they meet the necessary criteria for effective TES. Project demosite implementation will consist of two macro-steps. The first step will be devoted to TRL5-6 tests in partners’ lab as well as in a specific living lab (CARTIF III Building).

Demonstrate

ThumbsUp will demonstrate the production and operation of two innovative TES solutions, designed for both short-duration (daily) and long-duration (weekly) storage at the building level.The TES solutions will be demonstrated in three pilot sites in different EU climates and energy market contexts.

Replicate

ThumbsUp will conduct a replicability analysis to investigate the future impact of these technologies on electrical and district heating and cooling networks, aiming to provide cost-competitive solutions for widespread adoption.
